A pop of BOLD lipstick is not only a great holiday look, but it’s super easy and FAST, if you do it right.
I’ve been wearing a bold lip most of my makeup-wearing life, in fact, I recently had an old friend tell me that I look the same I did in the 90s (Revlon’s Blackberry anyone?). I’m not 100% it was a compliment, but hey, if you’re saying I look as fresh as I did when I was in high school, then I’ll take it!
The KEY to a long lasting and not cakey and flaky lip is all in the preparation. Wearing matte lipstick day after day is extremely drying, so you have to take care of your lips just like you do your face.
I always start with my favorite lip scrub by Fresh Lip Polish. I scoop a fingertip full out of the jar and rub my lips together gently for a few minutes, using my index finger a little bit – but don’t overdo it! The scrub is gritty and sweet, and wipes off easily with a washcloth. It leaves behind a little moisture, but not enough for me, so I immediately add a generous swipe of Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1. I leave this on for a few minutes as I’m getting ready elsewhere, then blot away most of the excess with a tissue. I don’t wipe it off with a washcloth or try to remove it all, but most of it so the lipstick/stain will last.
And yes, a lip pencil IS necessary! I have about 7,000 lip pencils in all different shades, but the most used and down to the nub is by MAC. I don’t get wild and fill in my whole lip – that’s way too drying for me, even with the Kiehl’s as a base, but I do outline my lips to prevent the lipstick from bleeding and feathering into my skin.
I then very carefully add my lipstick. Take a minute or two and really look in the mirror for this step. I KNOW, we’re all busy, but nothing looks worse or hookerish than sloppy red lipstick.
My go-to reds are Sephora’s Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick in Always Red (this entire line is very good!), Victoria Beckham for Estee Lauder in Chilean Sunset, and NARS in Heat Wave, for the days when you want more of an orangy-red. Heat Wave is a solid replacement for Chilean Sunset because it was a limited edition and super hard to find.
Speaking of Victoria Beckham for Estee Lauder, if you want a bit more of a plum and vampy look, try out Black Cassis.
The second KEY to rocking this look is to keep all other makeup simple and minimal.
I’m a HUGE fan of IT Cosmetics CC Cream, Bye Bye Undereye, and their all over face bronzer, blush & highlighter in one, Confidence in your Glow (such a huge time saver and has great pigment). I have it down to a science and can get my face on in a minute or two.
For my eyes, I do a quick sweet up NYX Lid Lingerie in Nude To Me (which is super affordable and is long lasting without creasing), some top-lid-only black eyeliner (thin and in the lash line), plus a generous application of mascara.
Here’s a real life snap of this look in action, taken about a year ago with my girl Julie Lauren.
Here’s the full list of products I mention. If there is a red that you LOVE, please let me know!
