It’s holiday season which means parties, parties, parties! School parties, neighborhood parties, work parties – you name it and it’s on the calendar. What is NOT on the calendar is more time in the day for me to get ready, so I have a makeup routine that is just as easy and quick as my normal routine, but adds some extra holiday flair. It’s simple, but special and sparkly using some new products from Milani Cosmetics.
This is what I call my base face, and I have to tell you, I’ve cracked myself up a hundred times looking at this picture. I simply can’t take one that doesn’t look like a mug shot! Anyhow, let’s get our makeup going. You want to start with a clean and smooth surface, so if you have time to apply a scrub or mask – go for it! If not, start with a freshly washed face, and give yourself a little splash of cool water to perk you up. Apply your daily regiment of products, your foundation, and spot concealer.
I recently stopped by CVS for a pretty serious Milani Cosmetics haul. Their display was easy to find on an end-cap and not only did I pick up several of their recently launched products, but a couple extra lipsticks and some illuminating bronzer, and didn’t break the bank in the process. Score!
I always start with my eyes, and step one is adding Eyeshadow Primer to the lids. It only takes a few seconds and it is a key step that will save your makeup later, especially if you are going from day to night. Milani’s lightweight Eyeshadow Primer has 8+ hours of performance and turns any eyeshadow into creaseless long wearing shadow.
Everyone wants something they don’t have, but one feature I’ve always been happy with on my own face are my eyebrows. I have been blessed with a surplus in the eyebrow department, and even some SEVERE over-plucking in the 2000s didn’t hurt my supply, however, there are a couple of spots I need to fill in, even them out and more than anything, get them to stay put, hence the Stay Put Brow. The double sided brush allows for precise color application on one side and a brush to get them into the right position. The pomade-like gel is not sticky or goopy and doesn’t rub off. Remember: eyebrows are sisters not twins! They don’t have to look exactly the same, so forego the stencil look and just fill in their natural state for a clean, modern look.
For this simple holiday look, I’m wearing a pretty shimmery nude eyeshadow on the lower lid to the brow bone with a lighter color right under my brows to give a lift to my arches. I’ve lined my upper water line with the waterproof Kohl Kajal eyeliner. It really opens up my eyes and makes them pop. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on lining the lower waterline or lash line, but I personally do not. I just recently learned this from one of my favorite makeup artists and I have to say I’m a believer. It really draws your eye down when you line the lower lid, and at my age, I need no more focus on the puff or circles under my eyes! Look up! Look up! Same goes for my mascara. I curl my lashes and add mascara only to the top lashes. Again, this is an opinion, but I really encourage you to try it out. It may take some getting used to, especially if you’re my age and grew up in the era of thick lower liner and mascara, but I really think you’ll like it!
Next up – the wow factor with my favorite new makeup product – the Fierce Foil Eyeliner by Milani in Black Gold. It comes in a pot with a custom brush that is surprisingly very easy to use. The color is a black base with a gold foil finish (also comes in brown, purple and navy), adding luminosity and sparkle. I’m going with a classic mini-cat eye and extending the color just past the lash line, but I’ve also seen this eyeliner used in a more dramatic smoky eye when the color is blended upward from the lash line to the crease.
Let’s bring that illuminating shimmer to the whole face. The Milani Cosmetics illuminating face powder is a triple workhorse and total timesaver: it acts as a blush, bronzer and illuminator. Don’t get too crazy though – dust lightly on your nose and chin and mostly focus on cheek bones and above your temple. Leave the space in the middle of your forehead down through your chin free of too much color to create natural contouring (no need for that nonsense!). Don’t forget your neck! Notice in the picture how my face matches my chest but my NECK is light? Do a quick dusting on your neck to blend it all together. Sometimes I do this as a last step after I’m dressed so I don’t transfer color to my clothing.
We’re almost there and I’m only about 4 minutes on the clock so far. A Holiday look calls for full pigment lipstick. This lipstick in Blushing Beauty is a super-luxe, grown-up girl lipstick. The color is bright and happy and a modern spin on the classic red lip. The color looks exactly on my lips as it does in the store, which is a huge plus for me. I can’t tell you how many lipsticks I’ve purchased only to toss to the back of a drawer once I get it home. It’s also nourishing, creamy and long lasting.
There it is! I’m at less than ten minutes start to finish, and have some real pretty and special makeup on using these new Milani Cosmetics products. The foiled eyeliner, the illuminating powder, the full and bright lip – these really add some extra color and sparkle to the season. Shake out my hair, jump into my dress and I’m ready to go (yesterday’s blowout still going strong with a little dry shampoo).
Tell me – how do you up your routine for a special occasion?
