Oh boy, do I LOVE trying out new skincare products, and since nothing wreaks havoc on my skin like summer, I’ve been trying out a number of new and old favorite products. Between the sun and the sunscreen and the mix of the two, my regular routine just hasn’t been cutting it. I’m experiencing a mix of super dry skin AND breakouts, so I have been experimenting with some new and old favorites to find the right routine. What I found? The routine needs to be mixed up a little in summer. I personally need a bit exfoliation and masks, but TOO much leaves my skin dry, so it’s all about finding the *right* masks and exfoliation. Of course, my go-to standards are ALWAYS there, too, so let’s get to it!
My everyday morning routine includes a quick face wash, SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic antioxidant, moisturizer, eye cream and sunscreen. Without a doubt, I don’t leave the house without this most important layer on my skin – sunscreen. I currently use both eltaMD and SkinCeuticals. If I’m wearing makeup and going somewhere, I use the elta MD, because it sinks right in without any white residue. If I’m hitting the pool, running, or playing outside with my kids, I use the SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense. It does NOT rub in all the way and you will look a little ghostly, but I’m ok with that.
The moisturizer I use (and how much) depends on how my skin is doing. Is it dry? Is it feeling normal? If it’s dry, I’ll use some of the SKII Facial Treatment Essence or the SkinCeuticals B5 Hydrating gel and see if I need any more. A little of the hydrating gel goes a long way, and I’m nearly out out my sample. This is one product I sampled that I will 100% purchase! Often that combined with the sunscreen is enough. On super dry days, I’ll add in the it Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream. It’s sooo luxurious and thick. Any extras I have I rub into the tops of my hands.
My evening routine is a switcher-upper. First step, a quick face wash. I’m currently rotating between the Glam Glow mud-to-foam cleanser (so fun!) and the L’Oreal Revitalift Bright Reveal. It’s a bit of a scrub cleanser, and I love myself some exfoliating action! Next up, I rotate the Strivectin Overnight Resurfacing Concentrate with the SkinCeuticals Retinol. I simply can’t handle the retinol everyday – it makes me way too dry – but it’s a critical step in my skin care. The retinol is applied to a clean face and you want to allow 10 minutes before applying anything else. I usually can go straight to sleep with just some chapstick. If I’m feeling dry, I’ll add some SKII essence or a light touch of moisturizer. The Strivectin overnight is a new product to my routine and I am super digging it. It’s a creamy liquid and makes my skin feel super smooth and supple. <–that word kind of makes me squirm, but it’s the best description for it!. I follow the Strivectin Overnight with the It Cosmetics moisturizer and some dabs of eye cream, natch.
And then, about 3-4 times a week I’ll use a mask. I’m kind of a mask junkie. I LOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooove masks. My skin needs them – my pores are large and can get clogged very easily. I find using a mask 3-4 times a week helps greatly to keep my pores clean and my skin looking great. These two new masks I recently received from L’Oreal are top of my list right now. The pink one exfoliates and refines, the dark gray is a charcoal mask that detoxes and brightens. Without a doubt, right after a mask I can instantly see and feel fresher and smoother skin.
And finally, for a quick punch of color, I’m OBSESSED with this new color from OPI, I got myself in a Jambalaya. It’s coraly-peachy and super saturated color. It looks great on tanned toes and doesn’t dull when you’re in the pool or sand, but do be careful with sunscreen on the polish – it makes it wear off quickly. My nails are a similar but lighter shade in gel, #155 🙂
Whew – that sounds like a lot, right? It doesn’t FEEL like a lot – I have the routine down and can get it all done pretty quickly – a few minutes maximum. I find that taking care of my skin makes me feel good about myself. It’s imporant to take a few minutes, literally wash off the day, or put on your suit of armor against what is ahead of you. It’s also the #1 way that you can keep your skin healthy and glowing – fending off the spots, wrinkles, and worse…a few minutes a couple times a day, that’s all!
OK, so tell me – what is your routine? Any products you are obsessed with that I have to try?
