Last night I went to my first ever fashion show put on by Fashion Houston. What a fun night out with my girlfriends! I loved the entire scene: Houston’s beautiful people dressed up to the nines, music blaring, lights, cameras, and champagne everywhere. The designers featured included two of my favs, Rebecca Taylor and Nicole Miller.
How did I find myself at Fashion Houston? A couple of months ago when I was nominated for the Circle of Moms award, I noticed another nominee, fashion blogger and image consultant Magen Pastor, also lived in Houston. Since I’m new and putting myself out there, we connected online and made a coffee date. We had an instant kinship based on our shared love of our babies, Houston, music, and socializing. Magen instantly took me under her (tall and glamorous wing) and introduced me to her circle of friends. I have lived in Houston for only five months, yet I knew about ten people at the fashion show last night, and met at least that many more. I wouldn’t have met any of the fantastic people had it not been for Magen and her incredibly kind spirit.
I sat with my friends Anika and Andi right along the center of the stage in the second row. Our view was incredible! We started chatting with our neighbors around us who happen to work at Neiman Marcus – they were such fun girls to talk to and had great energy. I was wearing my most favorite Nicole Miller dress, an extremely flattering and forgiving LBD with ruching in all the right places to conceal my mama of 2 belly, and we got to chatting about shopping, designers, our lives, etc etc. They let us know that Nicole Miller was doing a trunk show and meet and greet at Neiman the next day, and that we should stop by if we could. At first Anika and I, both crazy busy stay at home moms, thought there was no way we could rearrange our schedules, but a couple of phone calls and late night texts to friends, we had our afternoons free and planned to meet at Neiman.
Wow – what a treat! The entire line we saw on the runway the night before was there to try on, if you could squeeze into a sample size, which I did my darndest to do. Nicole uses comfortable fabrics and timeless flattering cuts and the dresses literally make you look slimmer because she designs them to hit in all the right places. These are perfect dresses for everyday people, like us moms, who still want to look fashionable on fun nights out. I tried on a couple of dresses and jackets, and settled on a beautiful black and white sheath that I pre-ordered. After a little shopping and mingling, we all moved to the dining room in Neiman to have lunch – with Nicole Miller! This was not a large group at all – there were nine of us total, including Nicole. She’s such a lovely woman and is completely down to earth. Must be the fact we learned that she was born in Texas! (Wow, been here five months and I already have such pride!)
So, yes, this is a post about my super fun night out on the town at Fashion Houston and having lunch with Nicole Miller, but really, this is a post about friendship and generosity. How grateful am I to Magen for bringing me into this awesome circle of friends? To Anika for picking up our tickets and being my fun lunch date today? How incredible is it to sit next to someone at a fashion show only to find a new friend and get an invitation to lunch with a designer? How about my dear friend from preschool who took my son a little early so I could make it to lunch on time?
Be a connector – have positive outlook on life – build up the people around you, and all this good energy will come right back at cha and kind of blow your mind. It sure does for me.
Now, nothing helps make you feel awesome like winning a contest, right? I want to share the Nicole Miller high I’m on right now by giving away this gorgeous black and while Artelier Nicole Miller scarf. It’s lightweight and perfect for adding a little chic to your everyday outfit.
