My favorite colors: black & white. I wear mostly black and white with pops of color here and there – it makes dressing so much easier when you have multiple uses for each piece. A great top that can go with denim, skirts, dress pants – – – versatility is the name of the game when you’re a busy mama, so naturally I’m all about the August J.Jill collection.
Let’s first focus on the gingham easy button down top. It’s soft and drapey in all the right places – not stiff or boxy at all. These photos were taken by the very talented Rocio Carlon on an unbelievably stormy morning – – like torrential downpour/streets flooding kind of morning, so we traded our original outdoor shoot for the neighborhood cafe Mercantile.
I’m wearing the top with distressed skinny denim and some open toe booties – a great transition look from summer to fall. I’m doing a half-tuck of the shirt. The key to the half-tuck is to not try to make it look too perfect. Tuck in half of the front and a little of the side, then lift your arms up over your head…voila!
The top has a little pocket at the hip line on the left side, a neat detail that you can feature or hide with a half-tucked look.
Last week I was at French Cuff Boutique, a fab Houston area boutique (opening their third location in a couple of weeks!) and spied this buttery soft leather clutch by Linea Pelle – and KNEW it was the clutch to complete this look.
As perfect as this button-down works with distressed denim, it also pairs with a cigarette style black pant, or even a pop of color like a RED pant or handbag. Here’s a tip: if you go with a bold red pant, keep all of your other accessories simple; if you go with a red handbag, keep the pants denim or black.
And then…this ikat print dress in cream and black. It’s made of a blousy and forgiving non-clingy material.
In fact if you want to accentuate your waistline a bit, add a cross body bag. The fringy cross body bag is by Rebecca Minkoff and also available at French Cuff. I mean, one trip in the shop and I had all my accessories to complete both of these looks.
I always wear my hair up whenever I wear a boatneck – it gives me a bit more height, and at 5′ even, I can use every inch! Speaking of 5′, this dress comes in a petite (which I’m wearing) and I definitely recommend for those of us 5’4″ and under. You can see the bottom of the black hem hits perfectly at my knee.
The back has a pretty pleat at the top, giving it a nice drape down the back of the body.
