In other words, mama-approved swimwear is officially in style! Woohoo, moms across the world rejoice the comeback of the one piece!
Even though the reality is most people are bundled up under several layers these days, Spring Break season is just around the corner. Personally, I’m in huge need of a swimwear makeover. I’m still wearing a suit from before Bennett was born even though my body has changed several times since then.
It felt like fate when Susan Bodack, the writer for In Style Swimwear’s Beauty and the Beach blog, and I connected to talk about this season’s trends in swimwear. For the past 5 years, Susan has been managing the social media and PR for online designer swimwear store InStyleSwimwear.com, and when it comes to swim fashion, she really knows her stuff. Here she is in a guest post to share the trends in modest yet chic swimwear with all of us modern moms.
For many of us women, just the idea of swimsuit season has a way of raising anxieties and insecurities within us, regardless of our shape or size. And to make matters worse, there has seemingly been an itty-bitty bikini takeover during the past several years, leaving us with slim pickings when it comes to choosing cute yet modest swimsuit styles. But luckily for all of us real women around the world, designers are starting to realize that there’s a real want and need for swimsuits that are fashionable yet functional, modest yet chic. Whether you’re a fan of the demure, need something that you can comfortably chase after your kiddies in or have a problem area that you’d like to try and conceal, there is a wide variety of modest yet chic swimwear styles to choose from this season.
It was probably our grandmother’s era when one-piece swimsuits were as popular as they are now. Even an increasing number of celebrities are being spotted in them! Luckily for those of us in the present day, they are much cuter and way more figure-flattering nowadays. For the 2014 season, whether you’re into prints, solids, halters, strapless bandeaus, fuller boy-cut bottoms, you name it, there’s plenty to choose from in the one-piece department. For women who are only concerned with hiding their stomach area but want something super sexy and trendy, look for one-pieces with plunging necklines, cheeky cut bottoms, side cutouts or embellishment like fringe or flutter detail. The one-piece options are limitless, so you can easily find a style that plays up the areas you want to accentuate and hides those you’d rather keep covered up.
If you’re a two-piece type of gal, there are also a number of modest yet chic options to choose from and you’re sure to fine one that resonates with you. You’ll find that in 2014 there are more designs that are undoubtedly fun and flirty, yet provide the coverage and/or support you crave. If you like to keep your chest more covered up, consider an athletic top, such as a sports bra-inspired style, which provides extra support and more modest coverage; opt for a style with colorblocking to get the trendy sporty-chic look. Supportive bustiers are also wildly popular this season, and many feature longer cuts that come down to your navel. And for a top that’s even longer, try a tankini-style top in a flowy blouson style, paired with any bottom of your choice.
Speaking of bottoms, retro-inspired high-waist bottoms are also making a comeback this season and are great for concealing your lower stomach area. Many of these high-waist styles feature special fabrics made with higher Lycra Spandex to help give the illusion of a smoother waistline. In addition, skirted styles are both timelessly sexy and universally flattering regardless of your shape, and they’re perfect for covering the upper inner thigh area.
Whether you’re into one-pieces or two-pieces, choose swimsuits that you feel comfortable and beautiful in and you’re guaranteed to have a blast this beach season. – Susan Bodack
