Living in Houston I now consider myself a warm-weather clothing expert. The key to dressing the kiddos for sun and humidity is to find clothing that is made from lightweight fabric, is easy to launder, and can withstand the activity of my busy three and five year old boys. Above all, summer time is play time, so I am looking for quality basics that won’t break the bank. I love to shop at local boutiques and find special one of a kind items, but when it comes to play time basics, these three stores are my go-to.
Gap: By far, Gap is my go-to for basics. There is almost always a sale going on, and I only shop online when there is a 30% off (or more) discount code. Standard shipping is always free on orders over $50, so I tend to stock up. Be sure to sign up for their email alerts so you’re in the know about their sales and discount codes. I recently purchased over ten pairs of shorts and for my five year old – he went through one of those rapid growth spurts – and received 40% off my entire order plus free shipping. You can’t beat it! Be sure to always read the reviews before purchasing. I find the reviews on Gap items are spot on and help inform good purchases. Some of my favorite Gap pieces for boys are the Jersey Knit shorts paired with a striped T.
J.Crew: Although the prices on J.Crew can be higher than other stores, the SALE section offers tremendous value for high quality and incredibly cute clothes. I like to look through their ‘Looks We Love’ section online to see what trends are being showcased for the littles, then I comb through the SALE section based on my boys’ sizes and almost always find something adorable and in season. I love their dress clothes, shoes, and graphic Ts. Who am I kidding? I love everything J.Crew for me and my kiddos! Free shipping kicks in on all purchases over $150, and if your shopping cart is less than that, it’s a flat-rate $5.
Carters/Osh Kosh: On the right day with the right coupon, you simply can’t pass up the great deals at a Carters store or Carters online. Carters has a wonderful rewards program, too, where you can earn dollars to spend on a future purchase. I like to stock up on lightweight summer pajama sets at Carters. They are always so cute, soft, and wash so well. I have Carters pajamas that have been handed down from my older son to my little guy that still look new. I also purchase all of the boys’ swimsuits from Carters. Their rash guard and swim trunk options are darling and don’t pill or fade through all the chlorine and washing all summer long.
