We moved from California to Texas! We’ve happily landed in Houston and we are very excited about our new adventure.
I’m sure I don’t need to explain the amount of stress that comes along with any move, let alone a cross-country move with small children. We spent a lot of time out eating out the last few months while our house was for sale and staged to look like a show room. Oh, and wine became my BFF. Needless to say, by the time we landed in Texas I was a bit shocked to see my reflection in the mirror. Just a few months of “bad” eating, stress, and fatigue had really taken a toll on this mama. Worse than not liking my reflection though, I just didn’t feel like myself; I was sluggish and uncomfortable in my clothes. I needed something to jump start my return to health – something to drop a few pounds, make my jeans feel less snug on my waist, and take away that little bloat under my chin.
Enter Joulebody. (Note: I loved this cleanse so much that I’ve become an affiliate for the company after I wrote and published this review, and this post contains affiliate links. If you have any questions, please contact me and we can discuss!) I’ve been interested in doing a cleanse for a while, but never really made the commitment. I’m not the most disciplined person, especially when it comes to food, and I simply didn’t have guts to try one. Brian and I did a simple 48-hour cleanse by Dr. Oz a few months ago, but it was quite a bit of work to prepare all of the meals along with still cooking different food for the kids. And it was a lot of cabbage. That’s the first reason why I was drawn to Joulebody – they ship your chosen cleanse via overnight delivery directly to your door. The second reason is that their cleanses are not juice-only. Their whole philosophy is that you don’t want to starve your body – you want to cleanse it.
The box arrives the morning you begin your cleanse with everything you’ll need all prepared and labeled for the day and time to drink/eat each item. It’s completely fool proof – there is no confusion as to what to eat or drink and when. I especially appreciated that the cleanse arrives in recyclable glass bottles, reusable mason jars, and compostable containers. Instant points for Earth friendly packaging.
There are several cleanses to choose from on their website depending on what you are looking for. I originally found Joulebody through Bliss and ordered the Happy Cleanse, an exclusive 3 day program they created for their partnership. I like the way they described the cleanse – that instead of starving and suffering, I’d be enjoying fresh, organic, vegan, gluten-free juices and meals while ridding my body of built up toxins. When I look online at Joulebody, it looks similar to the Cheat Treat or the Kickstart. Every morning began with a citrusy juice, followed by a small meal or soup at noon, another juice at 3pm, this one more savory and spicy, and finally at 7pm there was another small meal. In addition to these, every day I was also given one ginger meal replacement bar to eat, which I usually ate in the morning, and a package of Sexy Bites – soft little spicy cookies.
My first impression of the juices and food was: it’s very good. It is full of so much flavor and texture. You can really tell that all of the food is well made from quality ingredients. Some of my favorites were the beet soup, sunflower seed falafel, and the Sexy Bites. Joulebody uses signature spices that you’ll recognize in all their food, especially ginger, turmeric, and cayenne. The mix of these spices is potent and really gives everything quite a kick – in a good way. The flavors linger for a while and helped to curb my appetite. In fact, I did not crave sweets. I know for sure that my mother just hit the floor reading that line, so I’ll say it again: I did not crave sweets!
My second impression of the cleanse was: I’m not hungry. I kind of still WANT to eat, but I don’t need to. The portions are very small, and I kind of had a minor panic when I saw my 7pm meal on Day 2 as I was starving at the time, but I ate slowly, drank a big glass of water, and sure enough, it was filling and satisfying. There are a few foods you can supplement with if you are hungry, like a handful of blueberries or almonds or a green apple.
Joulebody also has great customer service. They helped me track down my package when delivery was delayed, then called me to check in once they heard it was delivered. Isn’t that incredible? They heard my cleanse was delivered, so they picked up the phone and called me to make sure I knew how to begin my cleanse with the later start time. Amazing! Throughout the cleanse there are a number of e-mails checking on your progress, including follow up at the end with post-cleanse tips and recipes.
Overall I really enjoyed the experience, in fact, I almost didn’t want it to end. It’s much easier eating heathy food and portion sizes when someone else prepares them for me! The biggest and most important reason why I’m recommending Joulebody though is that the cleanse provided me with enough energy and mental clarity to parent my two rambunctious boys. My reality is that I can’t do anything anymore that inhibits my energy and attention span, and starving me is one sure fire way for me to get crabby. Not only did I have enough energy on the cleanse, but I felt kind of pumped up. It’s amazing what ditching the cheese, bread, and wine can do for your waistline and spirits. I hate to admit that out loud, but it’s true! Eat heavy, feel heavy. Eat light, feel amazing! In fact, in the few days since my cleanse ended I’m finding that I am filling up quickly while eating and not having enough “room” to finish my portion. Will I do it again? Absolutely. I’m thinking once a season will be a nice frequency.
Here are some tips:
1) Joulebody will tell you this, too – I highly recommend you begin cutting down portion sizes and overall amount of food you are eating in the days leading up to your cleanse. It will be less of a shock when your intake is reduced.
2) Wait for your package the morning of delivery and call immediately if anything is delayed. Joulebody makes sure that it is packed to last, and is labeled perishable, but I did have a temp delivery guy and my package was delayed about four hours. Once you receive the box, store the food in your refrigerator according to date/time. It makes it easier to grab what’s next from the front of the line. It also keeps the food you’ll eat last nice and cold in the back of your fridge.
3) Prepare your home and partner. You are not going to be eating out or drinking on your cleanse, so make sure your partner is on board for a few days eating-in only. You may want to shop and meal plan what the rest of your family will be eating so that you don’t have to put too much time towards thinking about food. You may have more mental strength than I do, but I very grateful that Brian did not bring home a box of cupcakes to tempt me while I was on the cleanse.
So, what do you think? Do you want to try it out? If you do, please send me a note and let me know about your experience. As they say at Joulebody, have your cleanse and eat it, too! xo
