You guys, I’m so excited to introduce you to MALK, this week’s LuxeLocal feature. Houston’s own MALK is a family-owned plant-based milk company that crafts the most incredible raw almond and pecan milk. I’m dairy sensitive, so already a big fan of almond milk and drink it daily, but had never tried pecan milk until a few weeks ago when I met the amazing team from MALK at the 002Houston Summer Market.
The making of MALK began when one of the founders, August Vega, who happens to have a dairy allergy, became a Mom and her son Vincent was also born lactose intolerant. After investigating products on the market and the availability of a healthy alternative to milk, Ms Vega started making her own substitutes. A market shortage of dairy alternatives without binders, fillers and chemicals led Vega and a few family members to form MALK. Their mission is to deliver delicious and nutrient rich, organic plant based milk to consumers everywhere, and they pledge to give back to their local communities through contributing a portion of sales back to local food banks.
Not only did my husband I instantly taste and appreciate the difference in fresh and raw plant-based milks, but it’s also kiddo-friendly. In fact, it’s “Superhero approved” in our house. Here’s a few ways we enjoyed our two containers of MALK.
1) Straight up. The boys love the pecan milk and think it tastes like “melted ice cream”.
2) Breakfast bowls. We make quinoa breakfast bowls most mornings, and a splash of MALK on top brings them to a whole new level of deliciousness. We top some warm quinoa with a handful of berries, some diced in-season fruit like nectarines, a sprinkle of crunch (I’m loving sprouted pumpkin seeds), and a quick dash of cinnamon. I sometimes drizzle some maple syrup on top as well, but the natural sweetness of the pecan milk made it unnecessary. Soooo yummy, quick, and healthy.
3) In coffee. Both milks are dreamy and luxurious in coffee. The sweetened almond milk and the pecan milk both add a touch of sweetness and nutty flavor that makes coffee extra special. There’s nothing like a perfect mug of Sunday morning coffee, ahhh.
If you are in the Houston or Austin areas, make a special point to pick up some MALK and support this fantastic local company soon. MALK can be found in Houston at the Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market on Sundays, FitChef, Cafe Brasil, and Double Trouble. In Austin, find MALK at RiverCity Market and at The Buzz Mill. MALK is also found at various pop-up markets across Austin & Houston. And good news on the horizon: MALK has recently moved to a no heat process which extends shelf life by 4 weeks, and will be popping up in your favorite grocer soon! Keep an eye on their instagram to keep up to date.
I can’t wait for you to try this incredible, healthy, and LOCAL drink. Enjoy! xo
