Good times have been had once again, it’s basically impossible NOT to when this incredible group of Houston bloggers come together, and this time it was to welcome il ristorante italiano, Il Mascalzone, to its second location in Houston (they also have locations in London and coming soon in Miami). As a super proud italiana-americana (siciliana if you get technical) myself, I couldn’t be more excited about it. The new location on Shepherd is centrally located and easy to get to from any part of town.
YUM! We were treated to a special tasting menu of everything from appetizers to dessert.
The decor of the entire restaurant is modern and warm with some unexpected touches. I love the big wide tables and bright chairs and funky lighting. It feels distinctly italian, but not in a pizzeria or old dark restaurant vibe, more of a fresh and hip spot.
The menu is full of authentic Italian dishes like pizzas and homemade pastas, but you’re not going to get a cheesy sloppy mess of baked ziti (although I love a baked ziti!), but instead a delicious lasagna with a bechemel cream sauce rather than stuffed with ricotta, and marinated octopus with grilled polenta.
Can we just pause for a second and look at this pizza again?
This huge photo of Sophia Loren was the first thing I saw when I walked in to the room. I’ll never forget looking at my senior photographs and my grandpa said I looked like Sophia Loren in one of the pictures (I did not). He also used to tell me that I looked like Vanna White, though.
There were so many beautiful pictures taken this night and I only used a handful. Check out Megan’s post about the night here to see some more! Photo credits: My girl Leah Wilson (event and interior) and Chris Brown (food and interior).
