Each night before our boys go to bed, we spend a little time talking about our day and capturing these moments in a gratitude journal. We have an I Like Book for each of them (one blue, one green aka their favorite colors). The I Like Book is essentially a calendar based blank book where you fill in the months and dates. Next to each day are two blank lines to fill in something that you like about your child. How simple and sweet is that? All you have to do is think of two little things that you like about your child that day. The book is full of cute quotes and kid-friendly colors and fonts. It reads like a structured journal designed to make the practice of writing down your thoughts easy and fun. Meredith and Lance Looney, a husband and wife team – and parents to two boys – created the I Like Books to help people create “fantastic relationships” and moments of meaningful reflections with their loved ones. How wonderful is this? A real life family sharing their philosophy and tools with others to spread love and joy. LOVE.
Here’s a couple of tips for keeping a gratitude journal with your family:
1) Don’t over think it – the simplest thoughts are the best. This isn’t about finding an Oscar winning moment in every day, it’s about treasuring and being grateful for the little, everyday moments.
2) Don’t stress if you miss a day. We missed a few days while we were on vacation and instead of fretting, we wrote “awesome vacation” over those days in the book and got right back to our tradition once we were home.
3) Get everyone in on the action. Since the I Like Book has room for two thoughts per day, on the nights that Daddy is home he always wants to add something, and on other days I’ll ask the boys to think of something about each other – or about themselves – that they liked that day.
The best part about the I Like Books is I know we are creating a keepsake together – it makes me doubly grateful – one for the thoughts we are writing down, and two for the book of memories we’ll have when we finish all the pages.
So this is what I mean when I say I believe in practicing gratitude. To me, it means deliberately taking time each day to recognize your blessings. Purposely, with intention. This is something you can do privately yourself, but it’s also a great practice to do together as a family. More than anything, cuddling up and writing in our I Like Books is a wonderful way to end the day highlighting the positive.
