My sweet friend Jen and her husband recently had a great experience as guests at the Alamo Drafthouse – they were treated to an oh-so-elusive date night with dinner and a movie. With the temperatures dropping, heading indoors for a cozy movie sounds like just the ticket. Want to win dinner and a movie at Alamo Drafthouse for you and your date? Be sure to read all the way to the bottom to find out how to win. Thanks to Jen for sharing her night with us in this guest post! xo
Every mom knows that once you have kids, date nights can be rare. When we do have the opportunity to get dressed up and go out sans kids, dinner and drinks are usually the choice. It’s difficult to justify a movie because most people want to enjoy an adult dinner, and a pretzel and soda just doesn’t sound appealing. But let’s be honest…movie theaters have evolved. Gone are the days of cheap, uncomfortable seats, sticky floors and limited menu options. Now so many offer luxurious seating and ample elbow room to relax and enjoy your evening. It’s a fantastic thing for us busy moms who rarely have the chance for a night out. So many of my friends tell me they cannot recall the last movie they saw in an actual theatre. I get it—it takes a lot to schedule date night. Healthy kids, an able sitter, and a night where you don’t have to go to another kid’s birthday party.
That’s where Alamo Drafthouse comes into play – it offers much more than a typical cinematic experience. Located in a strip mall off Mason Road in Katy, Alamo Drafthouse draws you in with its big, neon lights. As new Houstonians, we are discovering that many hip restaurants and new hot spots are being built in spaces like this. Once you’ve snagged your tickets, you enter the theatre where red velvet seats and a snazzy new bar await you. Here you have the opportunity to grab a drink before the show. Standards like wine and locally brewed draft beers are available but they also offer a deep selection of craft cocktails and boozy shakes.
Once inside the theatre, guests may choose their seats, so tardiness can leave you feeling the sweat from your favorite movie stars. Each seat is equipped with an extensive menu and bar list. Your waiter comes to introduce himself and give you instructions. A fun way to order is to simply write down your request on a piece of paper and place it in a slot in front of you. The paper is quickly retrieved and your cocktails and food promptly served. I must say that I was impressed with the wide selection of food and beverages—anything from yummy apps to pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and burgers. And the bar list had an extensive list of beer, as well as enough cocktails and wine selections to suit anyone’s palate.
We decided to start with a delicious cocktail and then order our meals. I went with the classic cheesesteak which transported me back to the streets of Philly. With the perfectly toasted bread, thinly sliced and crispy steak, a layer of spicy peppers and melted cheese, it was classic comfort food for such a rainy night. My husband opted for a “fancy” chicken sandwich, complete with proscuitto and goat cheese—not your typical pretzel and soda movie fare. We had to top it off with the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies a la mode. Gooey, warm, delicious.
We chose to see the Hunger Games, which concerned me a little in terms of teeny boppers making loud noise and not allowing us to enjoy the show. But Alamo does a great job of sharing their rules of being respectful of your neighbors and keeping quiet during the film. I so appreciate this as someone who doesn’t get much time to focus on something that I actually want to see!
After the movie, which was displayed perfectly on the big screen, you can exit the theatre and either enjoy a nightcap on one of their cozy seats or outside on the patio. That’s definitely a perk of living in Texas—a glass of wine outside on the patio in late November.
Alamo definitely knows how to offer a fantastic choice for movie going. As appealing as popcorn and soda sounds for a night out, it’s so nice to have the option of an actual dinner while watching a movie. And the best part? You aren’t out all evening (less money for a sitter) and you arrive home after the kids are in bed, but with plenty of time to snooze before you are awakened bright and early by your favorite littles.
We had a fabulous night out at Alamo Drafthouse! Give it a shot for your next date night and you won’t be disappointed. Thanks to Alamo Drafthouse for treating us to a fun and luxurious date night. Jen DeVries is a grateful stay at home mama of two amazing girls who are the inspiration for her newest custom cookie company, Sweet Izzielu’s. During her years of teaching, she worked several side and summer jobs, including ones that allowed her to perfect my baking creations. Her girls love baking as much as she does, and after making so many goodies for friends, it evolved into a fabulous new home-based business where she can create beautiful confections for others while spending time raising her girls. Jen and her husband Ryan moved to Katy, Texas last year and loves being a sweet family of four that enjoys exploring what the South has to offer.
