Eyelashes are all the rage these days, whether you are tinting, using a lash growth product, committing to extensions every couple of weeks, or investing in custom special occasion lashes. I think it’s about time I get in on this craze, so last week I tried something new – lash perming. I have super straight lashes that almost point straight down. They are dark and dense, but straight as an arrow. I always have to curl my lashes before I apply mascara, and getting the curl right takes focus and skill so I don’t end up with kinks or pinch my skin, not something I can do on the run or in my quick mama-makeup routine. So when Aubrie Layne, famed Houston eyelash guru of Vanity Lounge in West Ave, mentioned they offer lash perming as a service, I just had to try it. Aubrie is an expert in all things beauty related, so if she is suggesting something, count me in!
The process is painless, quick, and quite a relaxing experience. The service is done while lying back on a comfy bed with your feet up and eyes closed. An adhesive roll is put across your closed eyelids, then each lash is pulled up and secured to the roll. After the eyelashes are secured, an eye-safe gel perming product is applied. And yes, it totally smells like 1990, but it is not overwhelming nor nearly as strong. In fact, it is kind of nostalgic to smell the very distinct scent. (They say smell is closely tied to memory, and during the fifteen minutes that the product worked its magic, I day-dreamed about my high school days. The fact that Depeche Mode was playing helped, too.) After about fifteen minutes, a neutralizer is applied for a few minutes, then lashes are then cleaned off, the adhesive roll removed and your lashes are dried with a cool poof of air. And voilà – even without mascara, my lashes were perfectly curled and my eyes looked wide open all in less than forty-five minutes.
It’s tricky to take a good picture of your own eyelashes! I look so serious here, but I wanted to capture a picture with my lashes after I applied mascara. Amazing, right? Each eyelash is perfectly curled and there are no kinks or crossed lashes. The cost for lash perming is $65 and the effects last up to six weeks. I’m in my second week right now and they look perfect. It’s important to not get your eyelashes wet for the rest of the day after your lash perm, so take a look at the calendar and make sure no pool parties are on the docket. Want to try for yourself? Vanity Lounge offers so many services from makeup to lashes. In fact, right now there is a special for new clients with Nikki Pesek, the newest addition to the talented team at Vanity Lounge: 50% off full extension service for $125 through July 31, 2014. Be sure to let them know I sent you!
