This week’s LUXELocal feature is Harper Street Treats. The creative baker behind this company is Melissa Byers, a former investment banker turned stay at home mama to three boys! Her love of baking became an official company in 2011 after friends and family started to notice her kids’ birthday cakes, cookies and other baked goods and asked if she could create a special baked good for them, too. If Harper Street Treats sounds familiar to you, you may have had one of her famous s’more pops at the annual West U Fathers and Flashlights campout – Melissa has been donating more than 800 s’more pops a year for the last four years. What a lucky group of campers!
The most popular Harper Street Treats items are birthday cakes, decorated cookies and cake pops. Melissa custom matches the cake decoration to her clients’ party themes and has never done the same decoration twice. My boys and I attended the birthday party with this one of a kind Woody Woodpecker cake and let me just tell you – it tastes as good as it looks! Her cookies and cake pops come individually wrapped and ribboned and make great party favors.
So what does this busy mom have to say about starting her own home-based business? 1) It’s okay to start small. Harper Street Treats is a great outlet for Melissa as it allows her to do something that she loves on her own schedule. 2) Keep time for family. Melissa has found that Harper Street Treats is a way to do what she enjoys without taking time away from her family, even turning down jobs from time to time if she has a couple of orders already going combined with a busy weekend with the kids. Way to go, Melissa! Finding the balance of doing what you love with the ability to spend time with the ones you love = bliss.
