Let me introduce you to Houston’s own Rongrong Devoe for this week’s Luxe Local feature. Rongrong is the extremely talented and creative illustrator known for her custom fashion sketches, prints, totes and accessories including the adorable donut iPhone case you see me using about town. If you recognize her work you won’t be alone – besides being one of Houston’s most sought-after creatives, she was recently featured in InStyle as one of five incredible fashion designers to follow on Instagram.
I asked Rongrong about her path to becoming a fashion illustrator and she said she always loved fashion as a young teen girl growing up in China. When she was 14, her mother bought her the fashion magazine Vogue China and it opened the door into the fashion world. Rongrong started to learn how to draw around the same time and was obsessed drawing the beautiful models and dresses in the magazines. Clearly there was some serious talent to go along with Rongrong’s interest because her illustrations have caught the eye of magazines and fashionistas alike. Just this month she has a full page feature in Houston’s Modern Luxury.
I can get lost looking through Rongrong’s Etsy shop. There are so many darling prints and accessories. Her totes and iPhone cases make great gifts, and her prints can be framed and displayed in everything from a nursery to a teenager’s room to a blogger’s office (which is where my fashion prints are adorning the walls!). When I asked Rongrong what her favorite piece she has drawn is, she said that there are so many pieces she has deep connections with, but if pressed she chooses the Beach Time art because her hometown Qingdao is a beach city and the pieces bring her great memories.
Of course whenever I talk with successful women entrepreneurs I want to know what their key to success is, and I agree whole heartedly with Rongrong when she says “no matter what kind of business we do, passion is the ultimate drive. Be prepared there will be a lot of hours to put in but you will feel be on top of the world when your hard working paid off.” Amen, sister!
You can find Rongrong’s artwork on her Etsy shop and be sure to follow her on Instagram where she shares new drawings and fun behind the scenes images. If you’re in Houston, stop by Tootsies on September 16th where Rongrong will be doing live sketches at the launch of Manoosh’s new Susan Scarf for Ovarian Cancer Awareness. I will be there right at the start!
